Support Services

The University of Adelaide offers a wide range of support services for international students. Staff at the English Language Centre are happy to assist with any questions, from accommodation to study concerns, with on-going support from teachers and administrative staff.

Accommodation Assistance

There are a variety of accommodation options available to international students in Adelaide.

University of Adelaide managed student accommodation

Operated by the University for the exclusive use of University of Adelaide students. The University of Adelaide understands that accommodation plays an important role in setting the foundation for academic success. University of Adelaide students have access to an impressive portfolio of University-managed student accommodation options, made available specifically to support a successful transition into University life.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE VILLAGE

Live to succeed at the University of Adelaide Village.

A short five minute walk from The Village is the Central Market where students can buy fresh and healthy market produce, including fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood.

Located next to Central Market is Chinatown where residents can access an abundance of food options, mostly of Asian persuasion, from a variety of food courts, specialist supermarkets and affordable restaurants.

Behind Chinatown, and just minutes from The Village, is the Gouger street café precinct where residents can enjoy hot balmy summer nights and cosy winter evenings in the company of good friends and housemates, over coffee or a pot of tea.

MATTANYA STUDENT RESIDENCES

Mattanya is comprised of a group of four University-owned residences situated in North Adelaide.

A fifteen minute walk to North Terrace campus and five minutes from the trendy Melbourne Street café and restaurant precinct, Mattanya offers comfortable, convenient and independent living in a quiet suburban location.

When you secure a place at Mattanya you will be allocated a room within a four or five bedroom residence, sharing a bathroom and the common living areas of the house with other University of Adelaide students.

Consider the exceptional value of an accommodation fee that includes access to a fully furnished dwelling, an unlimited wireless internet connection and all utilities (i.e. water, gas and electricity): with the flexibility of paying the accommodation fee over two instalments (April and September) directly to the University through the course of the year.

URBANEST@UOA

Urbanest is a preferred student accommodation provider of the University of Adelaide.

At Urbanest you have everything you need to enjoy your time studying from intelligently designed social areas, an action packed monthly activity calendar and go-to-residents for peer support.

Located directly across from the main University of Adelaide campus and a short walk to Rundle Mall, you’ll be in a central location that will allow you to explore all Adelaide has to offer during your studies.

The English Language Centre also runs a very successful Homestay Program where international students stay with an Australian family. It is a great way to settle into a new city, learn about the culture and practise English in real-life situations.

Arrival in Adelaide

If you stay in the ELC's Homestay Program your host family will meet you at the airport when you arrive.

If you have arranged alternative accommodation, the University offers an airport pick up service. A university representative will meet you and transport you and your immediate dependants (partners and children) / or your parents to your accommodation.

If you are a GEAP student who is not using our ELC Homestay Program there is a fee for the airport pick-up service which will be charged by the Accommodation Service at the time of registering for this service.

Orientation

On your first day at the centre a comprehensive orientation session will help you settle into life and study as quickly as possible. Orientation sessions will cover a wide range of topics from accommodation to culture differences to time management. Students are also given a guided tour of the University of Adelaide campus and the city of Adelaide.

University Facilities

ELC students will benefit from having access to a wide range of facilities whilst with us.

For students studying for 5 weeks or more, a University of Adelaide student card will give you access to our modern Hub Central complex, a space designed for students with 24 weekday access to computers, meeting rooms, cafes and restaurants and an excellent opportunity to interact with other University students.

English Language Centre students can access the University of Adelaide’s Barr Smith Library, an outstanding teaching and research library, housing more than two million volumes.

Students have access to the ELC computer suite, as well as facilities across the University. You will have your own email account, access to the internet and the university’s online resources. All classrooms in the ELC are fitted with a variety of multi-media, ensuring a relevant and modern learning environment.

All students have access to a vibrant social life – the campus offers a variety of recreational and sporting associations and a university gym, while there are also a number of busy cafes serving international food.

As a member of the University community, you will also have access to a medical centre, bank, post office, travel agent and various student services such as employment assistance and counselling.

ELC Social Club

The ELC Social Club offers students a variety of affordable, fun events and  activities. Recent excursions have included trips to the harbour for dolphin spotting tours, tours of the historic Adelaide Hills, soccer games, quiz nights and ten pin bowling competitions.  These activities are a great way to meet other students and see more of Adelaide and South Australia.
