Q1.Do I need a visa to come to Australia?
 Yes, you need a valid visa to travel to Australia. Depending on your country of origin you may be able to apply for your visa online 

Q2.Can I study at Discover English with a tourist visa?
Yes. If you are tourist visa holder you can study at Discover English for up to 3 months.

Q3.Can you help me with my visa?
Discover English is a language school and we can not give any visa advice. We can however refer you to one of our education or migration agents that will be able to assist you with the visa process.

Q4.When can I start?
General English and IELTS preparation courses at Discover English start every Monday so you can start anytime you like! For Cambridge ESOL and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) start dates please see our Courses.

Q5.How long can I study English?
It’s up to you! You can study from one week to one hundred weeks, your choice. You can complete our short online placement test and we will assess your proficiency level and recommend a course suitable for you.

Q6.Where are the teachers from?
Discover English employs teachers from a variety of English speaking countries like Australia, New Zealand, UK, United States, Canada and South Africa.

Q7.What happens on the first day?
Commencement and orientation for new students starts from 8:00am. Please bring your letter of offer or Confirmation of Enrolment, passport and visa copy. You will take a placement test so we can assess your level and assign you to the appropriate class. All students have to attend a comprehensive orientation. We will give you a campus tour and introduce you to the key staff members. To finish off we will take you for a quick walking tour of Melbourne city.

Q9.Can the college help me to find a job?
Discover English offers a weekly Job Club which all students with work rights in Australia are encouraged to attend. During the Job Club we will help you to:

  • Apply for Tax File Number (TFN)
  • Write a resume
  • Prepare for the job interview

You will also receive a list of useful websites where to look for work and tips on how to approach a prospective workplace. Our staff are always available to discuss the Australian taxation system, work rights and your visa work conditions and limitations.

Q10.What can I do if I feel homesick?
Moving to another country can be challenging and difficult experience. Discover English offers broad student support services for students like you. We understand the challenges of coming to a country that has different culture, language and customs, as many of our staff have shared your experience in the past. We also recommend you read our blog with useful articles to overcome homesickness and other challenges while living in Melbourne.

Q11.What is the best time for me to visit Melbourne?
Melbourne has four seasons (we are also known to experience four seasons in one day!):

Yes, Discover English offers activities 7 days per week. We encourage all the students to attend the after class cultural and social activities as it's the perfect way to meet new friends, practice your English and explore Melbourne city.

Q13.Can I change the course after I start if I want to focus on more specialist English?
Yes! If you are meeting the entry requirements you will be able to change the course.

Q14.Do I have to buy a new textbook if I change the course?
Yes. Each time you level up or change the course you need to have a new textbook.

Q16.How much money should I take with me to travel to Australia?
Melbourne is a reasonably priced major city with a range of living options. As a guide, you will need a  minimum of $20,290* (excluding tuition) per year to cover accommodation, daily living costs, health services and other expenses. The amount of money you bring is a personal choice, but you must ensure you have enough money to cover certain typical expenses, for example:

  • Share accommodation: $140 – $200 p/w (bond usually: 4 weeks rent (payable as a deposit)
  • Monthly transport ticket (Zone 1+2) 30 days: $155
  • Monthly mobile phone plan: $40
  • Coffee: $3.50
