ANU College Accommodation

ANU College students have the option to stay in ANU campus accommodation, private student housing, or in homestay accommodation with a local family. To help you adjust to life in Australia when you first arrive, we recommend a homestay.

If required, we can arrange transport to your housing. When you arrive in Canberra, you will be met and taken to your pre-arranged accommodation. To book this service, contact: greeting@anucollege.edu.au

• ANU campus accommodation

ANU offers a wide range of on-campus accommodation within a diverse and vibrant community. There is a choice of catered and self-catered accommodation, with private or shared bathrooms. On-campus student accommodation is usually furnished and well-equipped with facilities for studying, relaxing and socialising.

• Homestay Accommodation

For new students studying in Australia for the first time, homestay is recommended as the safest and best option.

All Homestay hosts associated with ANU College have been screened by the College’s Homestay provider, the Australian Homestay Network, and are required to undergo training in order to provide a high level of service and comfort to the student.

The minimum period of Homestay is 4 weeks, and students are required to make payments in advance. Further details will be made available to students requiring Homestay once placement has been made.

Australian Homestay Network (AHN)

ANU College contracts the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) to provide a safe, welcoming and quality accommodation option for students. A homestay experience with AHN offers supportive family-style environment to assist students’ adaptation to life in Canberra and Australia. For many students homestay is a memorable and unique cultural experience. All AHN homestay families undertake a thorough registration process that includes training, police checks, personal interviews and home-inspections.

AHN Homestay Hosts are trained to assist international students with:

• Settling into their new community
• Understanding the basics of Australian culture
• Everyday conversational skills
• Learning the basics such as buying transport tickets, where the local shops are, how to access banking, internet, mobile phone and personal safety tips
• Frequently used English and ‘Aussie’ words and phrases

An AHN Homestay student is provided with:

• A supportive family environment and home to live in
• A clean furnished room (this includes items like a bed, desk, wardrobe, chair and a study lamp)
• Meals and accommodation (including utilities)
• Ongoing Homestay host and student support
• AHN 24/7 professional phone support
• AHN Contents Insurance for students and hosts as per AHN Insurance Policy

The visiting student will have access to bathroom and laundry facilities as well and can choose a range of AHN meal service options. Students are welcome to extend their original homestay placement.

* There is an additional $40per week Guardianship Fee. This is for students who do not have a legal guardian (i.e. parent or DIAC-approved custodian) living in Canberra

• Under 18s

Accommodation for under 18s must comply with the approved guidelines set by ANU College. Underage students commencing study at the College can either live with a relative that has been verified by the Department of Home Affairs, or they must follow the College’s approved welfare arrangements.

• Accommodation and welfare arrangements

ANU College has a clear set of approved accommodation and welfare arrangements regarding accommodation for under 18s. These arrangements have been designed to safeguard and support all underage students at the College.

Underage students are required to:

• live with an Australian Homestay Network (AHN) family,
• and employ the services of a professional caregiver (guardian).

• The role of guardians

Guardians are responsible for the welfare of underage students. They ensure that all students in their care receive the best possible experience while studying at ANU College.

Our multilingual guardians meet with their students on a regular basis to support and guide them in all aspects of life. Guardians regularly communicate with parents, College staff, Homestay hosts and other relevant bodies.

Guardians can be arranged through Professional Student Care or International Student Alliance.

• Students currently enrolled in Australia

Student visa holders currently enrolled in another Australian institution must contact ANU College if they would like the College to make welfare arrangements.

• Private housing and house share

International students at ANUC are welcome to arrange their own private rented accommodation or student house share in Canberra. If choosing this option, you must be prepared to dedicate enough time, effort and money to find the right place.

Off-campus accommodation

You can choose to live alone in private housing or with others in house share student accommodation. A house share is a the best way to make friends and enjoy a supportive and sociable student life.

Before making a commitment, you should always view the property first or ask someone you trust to view it for you. If responding to a house share advert, you should meet the housemate(s) before you pay any money or make an agreement.

Under the Residential Tenancies Act, it is illegal to take a deposit to hold a property, so do not pay any money until you sign a tenancy agreement and receive the keys to the property.

A tenancy agreement is legally binding. Make sure that you read and understand all of the terms and conditions before signing.

Costs

To secure a rental property or house share, you may need to pay a bond. You will also need to budget for other setting-up costs and ongoing expenses, like electricity bills.

Setting-up costs:

• A bond to secure the property or room (equivalent to four weeks rent)
• Rent paid in advance (usually one month’s rent)
• Connection fees for gas, electricity, telephone, internet etc
• Insurance for your personal belongings
• Furniture, bedding and kitchen utensils.

Ongoing costs:

• Rent
• Household utilities (gas, electricity, water, phone, internet).
