Frequently Asked Questions about Macquarie University English Language Centre

I am an international student and need to improve my English skills before starting my degree/diploma/foundation program(s). How can I apply for an English course?

If you plan to study at Macquarie University, you will need to apply for your degree/diploma/foundation program(s) first. Please submit an application to Macquarie International via international online application manager. On your application, you can indicate that you would also like to study English at the ELC. Your application will be assessed by Macquarie International Admissions and they can issue a package offer* if you require English study. If you receive a package offer, you do not need to get a separate English offer.

What is a Package offer?

A package offer is for an English program at the ELC plus your chosen degree/diploma/foundation program(s) at Macquarie University. You will study English first and when you successfully complete the appropriate English course, you will progress to your next program of study.

I have received a conditional offer from Macquarie International and I want to study English at the ELC to meet the entry requirement. What should I do?

If you already have an English proficiency test result (IELTS, TOEFL or PTE), please submit it to Macquarie International for them to issue a package offer.

I want to study just English at the ELC. How do I apply?

You can apply via our How to apply page.

Which English course should I apply for?

It depends on your current level of English and your study plans.

If you plan to study a Macquarie University degree/diploma/foundation program, you will need to complete a Direct Entry program at the ELC. Depending on your English level, you may need to study additional weeks of English before the Direct Entry program. Please send your English proficiency test result (IELTS, TOEFL or PTE) to Macquarie International so that they can confirm which program is required and how many weeks of English study  you need.

For students who plan to only study English with us, we can recommend a suitable program based on your current English level and the information that you provide on your application form. Please provide your English proficiency test result (IELTS, TOEFL or PTE) if you have one.

How many weeks can I study English at the ELC?

You can study from 5 to 60 weeks with us depending on your level and your goal.

What age do I need to be to study at the ELC?

You will need to be 16 years old or above. If you are an international student aged 16 to 18, under Australian law, you must submit a special form to confirm your welfare and accommodation arrangements. Once the program commences, we will provide you with extra support. Find out more here.

Do I need a minimum English level to study at the ELC?

There is no minimum English level but we recommend that you provide your English proficiency test result (IELTS, TOEFL or PTE) so that we can assess your English level and recommend an appropriate program for you.

My IELTS score is X. Which level will I be in at the ELC?

This depends on your individual situation and goals. We will assess your application and recommend the number of weeks you need based on your current level and goals.

If I don’t have a proficiency test score (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE), can I apply to study at the ELC?

Yes. Submit your application and we will tell you what to do next.
