Extended post-study work rights

When you enrol in a course linked to current Australian workforce shortages, you’ll be eligible to live and work in Australia for longer under the Temporary Graduate Visa.
Following an announcement on eligible qualifications in February 2023, the Australian Government has confirmed the full list of all selected courses eligible for an extended post-study ‘stay and work’ period in Australia. Extended post-study work rights are intended for international students graduating with a degree linked to workforce shortages in Australia.
From 1st July 2023, an extension of post-study work rights is available for international graduates enrolled in eligible courses including but not limited to Engineering, IT, Sciences, Teaching, Behavioural Sciences and Health.
There are over 3,000 eligible courses available on the list and international graduates enrolled in these courses will have two years or more added to their Temporary Graduate visa.
This gives students valuable time to build on their skills already learnt through their studies by working in an Australian setting. The extra time will give some students the ability to apply for higher level positions to get exposure to supervisory and management roles.
Post-study work visa increased time
Under the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) Post-Study Work Stream, the ‘stay and work’ period for eligible graduates of listed qualifications and courses will increase as follows:
- Four years for Bachelor degree graduates, up from two years previously
- Five years for Master degree graduates, up from two or three years previously
- Six years for Doctoral or PhD graduates, up from four years previously
Eligibility
You will be eligible for this extension if:
- you meet all the eligibility criteria for the Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), and
- your qualification is on the list of eligible qualifications
- your course matches the CRICOS eligibility on the list
The list is quite specific so if you’d like to maximise the time you’re allowed to stay in Australia to work after your studies one of our counsellors can help to match you with the right course at the right institution.
