Prison and Security Officers play a crucial role in maintaining safety and security within correctional institutions and providing essential security and investigative services to various organizations and individuals. Their responsibilities include supervising and controlling inmate activities, preventing disturbances and escapes, and ensuring the overall well-being of the facility.
Indicative Skill Level:
The skill level required for most occupations in this minor group varies and is determined by the following qualifications and experience:
In Australia:
- AQF Certificate III with a minimum of two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
- AQF Certificate II or III, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)
- AQF Certificate I, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5)
In New Zealand:
- NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
- NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)
- NZQF Level 1 qualification, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5)
In some cases, additional relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required alongside formal qualifications. For certain Skill Level 5 occupations, a short period of on-the-job training may be necessary, instead of or in addition to a formal qualification. There are also instances where no formal qualification or on-the-job training is required.
Tasks Include:
- Observing and monitoring prisoner conduct and behavior to prevent disturbances and escapes
- Supervising prisoners during work assignments, recreational periods, sporting activities, and meals
- Patrolling and guarding properties, checking for unauthorized entry
- Providing armed escort for the transport of cash and valuables
- Maintaining order at venues with large gatherings of people
- Conducting investigations for clients
- Advising clients on security requirements and recommending and designing security specifications
