Motor Mechanics (ANZSCO 3212)
Motor Mechanics are professionals who specialize in repairing, maintaining, and testing motor vehicles and other internal combustion engines. Indicative Skill Level:
Most occupations within the Motor Mechanics unit group require a certain level of skill, which is typically acquired through qualifications and experience. In Australia, this includes an AQF Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training, or an AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In New Zealand, a NZQF Level 4 qualification is required (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). However, it is worth mentioning that at least three years of relevant experience can sometimes substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In certain cases, additional on-the-job training and/or relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. It is also important to note that registration or licensing may be required for this occupation.
Tasks Include:
- Detecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults in engines and parts
- Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms, and other components, and checking parts for any issues
- Repairing and replacing worn and defective parts, and reassembling mechanical components while referring to service manuals as needed
- Performing scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, lubrications, and engine tune-ups, to ensure smoother running of vehicles and compliance with pollution regulations
- Reassembling engines and parts after repairs have been made
- Testing and adjusting mechanical parts to ensure proper performance
- Diagnosing and testing parts with the assistance of computers
- Inspecting vehicles and issuing roadworthiness certificates or detailing work required for roadworthiness
- Responding to vehicle breakdown service calls
