In New Zealand:

  • NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

However, it is important to note that at least three years of relevant experience can substitute for the formal qualifications mentioned above. In some cases, additional relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may also be required for practicing as a Wall and Floor Tiler.

Tasks Include:

  • Examining plans, measuring, and marking surfaces to determine the layout of the work
  • Preparing wall and floor surfaces by removing old tiles, grout, adhesive, filling holes and cracks, and ensuring surfaces are clean
  • Spreading adhesive onto prepared surfaces and tiles, and setting tiles in their designated positions
  • Utilizing tile-cutting tools to cut and shape tiles needed for edges, corners, and around objects such as fittings and pipes
  • Ensuring tiles are correctly aligned and properly spaced
  • Grouting tiles, as well as cleaning and removing excess grout
  • Applying waterproofing systems to ensure the durability of the tiles
  • May also be involved in laying floors made of granolithic, terrazzo, cement, or similar compositions
  • Creating mosaics by laying colored tiles in patterns
